Ortigia got under my skin the moment I arrived. For seven wonderful years, this tiny island was my home. Now I'm excited to share its magic with you.

Don't let its size fool you. Ortigia holds over 2,500 years of history. Once the beating heart of ancient Syracuse, it was one of the most powerful cities in the Greek world. Today? It's a place of slow mornings, long evenings, and moments that linger long after you leave. It doesn't just welcome you. It pulls you in.

☕ Best Morning Coffee – Acca Punto

Espresso and a pistachio cornetto. A match made in Sicilian heaven. Grab a table outside and settle in for the best show in town: tourists beginning their day alongside a familiar group of older Sicilian men, deep in their morning debates. The hiss of the espresso machine is the soundtrack.

🌅 Best Sunset Spot – Mikatu

This is one of my favourite places in the world to watch the sun go down. Order a chilled glass of wine or a spritz, find your spot by the railing, and wait. As the sky turns from blue to gold to deep amber, they bring you complimentary bruschetta. Simple, perfect, and free. Don't miss it.

🗺️ Best Wandering Spot – The Giudecca

The oldest part of the island. Don't be intimidated by the maze of tiny alleyways - take them. Once home to pirates and ladies of the night, today it's full of character, street art, and hidden corners waiting to be discovered.

🍸 Best Aperitivo Spot – Crema e Cioccolato

Run by my good friends Salvo and Simona. Visit twice, and they'll greet you like a long-lost cousin. The Aperol Spritz here is the best on the island. Trust me on this. Pair it with a small plate of olives and let the evening drift by.

🍕 Late-Night Bite – Mario's Pizza

At the sea end of Via Roma, this tiny hole-in-the-wall serves fresh pizza from a family business that spans generations. Perfect for when the hunger hits after a long evening. Watch them stretch the dough, order a slice (or two), and eat it standing up like a local.

Historical Gems You Can't Miss

For a small island, Ortigia packs an extraordinary historical punch. Here's what to look for as you walk the streets:

Ortigia Cathedral (Duomo di Siracusa)

A baroque masterpiece built directly on top of a 5th-century BC Greek temple. Look closely at the exterior. You can still see the original Doric columns fused into the Christian structure. A timeline in stone.

Fountain of Diana

The centrepiece of Piazza Archimede. A stunning sculptural tribute to the goddess of the hunt, surrounded by elegant palazzos and lively café terraces.

Temple of Apollo (Tempio di Apollo)

Dating back to the 6th century BC, it is one of the oldest Doric temples in all of Sicily. Now a ruin, but a powerful one. Walk around it and imagine the city that once stood here.

Fountain of Arethusa

A freshwater spring that bubbles up right beside the sea. Surrounded by papyrus plants and layered with Greek mythology, it is poetic, improbable, and beautiful.

A Lovely Place to Pause

Just beside the Arethusa Fountain, slip through the iron gates into a grove of ancient trees. It is like a tiny forest in the heart of the island. Follow the path toward the marina, and on a clear day, you might catch Mount Etna rising quietly in the distance, a plume of smoke trailing from her peak.

This is one of those peaceful moments where Ortigia invites you to slow down. To breathe. To simply take it in.

A Little Note From Me

Ortigia isn't just a destination. It's a feeling.

It's slow mornings and golden evenings. It's the click of footsteps on limestone alleys and the scent of salt and jasmine in the air. For me, Ortigia was home for seven wonderful years. A place filled with memories, friendships, and everyday magic.

It's a joy to share this island with you, alongside Dana, whose creativity and warmth add another beautiful layer to this experience.

We hope that as you wander these streets, sip a spritz, and watch the sunset over the harbour, you begin to feel the same magic we do.
